In his early 20’s, my father-in-law had an opportunity to buy a green 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme off a lady’s parents that he worked with for 50 dollars.
The car had no transmission and no back bumper. He had the car painted black and silver but it wasn’t the best job. He ordered parts from the states and got his best friend’s father to put the body back together. Eventually the car was on the road with a custom black cherry paint job.
It wasn’t long before the die-hard race fan decided to tub-out his car. I mean that’s what all the race fans were doing back then! The only difference was that the car has not seen any rain since he took it over. Unfortunately, the transmission blew so he sent the motor and transmission away to be professionally built.
Along this time, my father-in-law was diagnosed with MS. Slowly, as time passed, he lost more and more mobility. So there sat the car unfinished. His dreams shattered.
Fast forward 20 years later, where the car still sat on jack stands, I took the cover off to find a hidden gem. Tools, parts, even schematics, still laying there from where he left off.
For 2 long years of blood, sweat and tears I made his tubbed car a reality. I basically had to go over every single piece on the car, order and install parts, make custom brackets. You name it, I did it!
The look on his face and the little fist bump I got when she finally turned over for the first time was remarkable. This is what it was all about. Making his dream come true and showing off his car he worked on and waited for, for over 20 years.
The torch has been past on to my wife and for us to see the looks and smiles on everyone’s face as we show it off and drive by.
One last thing to do is get him in the car for a cruise around town and make him smile ear to ear.
