Very Rare 1985 Mercedes Benz 500 SL

If you wanted to buy a new Benz roadster in the 1980’s you had one choice; a 380 SL.  However; if you lived in Germany you could buy a 500 SL, which was much faster with dramatically greater horse power V-8 in the very same body and interior.

Very few of the 500s were built each year from 1982 to 1986. After looking for years for a good one, I found this midnight black beauty with only 68K miles in Dallas Texas in 2008.  It reached the USA the only way possible at the time= “US military possession”.  Because of the typical low production relation to collector car value, this 107 is valued at four times of a 380 or 560 of the same series.

While my roadster looks just like the many thousands of classic ’81-89 “107” Mercedes movie and TV favorites,  it’s the engine that makes the difference as only 2,500 were built with the 5 Lt V-8 in 1985.  In American muscle car terms this is a 427/435 triple carb. Vette, compared to the much slower and less desirable 350 V-8.
