On Friday March 29th, 2019, Zehr Insurance and Shakespeare Brewing Company commenced our joint project – the ZehrBREW!
ZehrBREW is a Marzen beer (German for ‘March’), a German beer style traditionally brewed in March, because in Germany, it is still illegal to brew beer between April and September as it has been since the 1500’s because back then, when brewing, they didn’t use yeast. The brewers used a natural process (air) to make the beer ferment. During the months of April – September, the air was warmer which sometimes caused extra things to grow in the beer which made it dangerous to consume, so that is why you cannot brew beer in Germany between April and September. October was then a month to use up all of the old beer (hence Oktoberfest) before starting over again and making new beer for the coming year.
The style is characterized by a medium to full body, a malty flavour, and a clean dry finish.
We will be following this beer along the brewing process until its official release in October. Stay tuned!
